All About Rockford, MI

The Rockford region was originally inhabited by Native American communities, such as the Hopewell, Mascouten, and Ottawa tribes, who left trails throughout the area that were noted by early surveyors. Although there have been no archaeological finds of Native American settlements in the Rogue River valley, evidence suggests their presence in the region.

The city of Rockford owes much of its early development to Smith Lapham, the first significant settler in the area. Lapham arrived in Kent County in 1843, having lived in Washtenaw County for 18 years, and helped complete a dam and sawmill started by William Hunter. As compensation, Hunter gave Lapham 40 acres of land on the east side of the Rogue River, where Lapham built his sawmill in 1844. Other settlers, such as John Long, Freeman Burch, and William Thornton, arrived soon after. By the fall of 1845, the settlement had grown to approximately five houses and became known as Laphamville, as most of the land was owned or sold by Lapham. In 1856, William Thornton officially platted the settlement as Laphamville.

In 1865, the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad Company started building a railroad that would extend northward through the village. The railroad urged residents to adopt a shorter name, and a new resident from Rockford, Illinois suggested the name of his former hometown. The name was derived from the shallow, rocky ford below the dam where travelers crossed the river. The name Rockford was narrowly approved, and the village was replatted under this name in 1865. The Village of Rockford was officially incorporated in June 1866 with a population of 315 inhabitants.
