Search this question nationally and you get “once or twice a year.” That range is useless, because it averages a bungalow in Phoenix with a wooded lot in Grand Rapids. Here is the West Michigan-specific version.
The Baseline: Twice A Year
For a typical home here with moderate tree cover, clean late spring and late fall.
Spring matters more than people expect. Maple seeds, blossoms, catkins, and cottonwood fluff drop heavily in May and June, and they pack into outlets far more densely than leaves do. Plenty of homeowners clean only in November and cannot understand why their gutters overflow in a July thunderstorm.
Fall cleaning has to wait until the leaves are actually down. Cleaning in early October when half the canopy is still attached means doing it again in three weeks. Late October into November is right for most of our territory.
Three Times A Year If You Have Pine
Pine needles are the hardest debris in this trade. They are small enough to pass most screens, they shed year-round rather than seasonally, and they mat into a felt that water cannot get through. If you have white pine, spruce, or hemlock within reach of the roof — common in Rockford, Ada, Cascade, and the wooded lots around Grand Haven — plan on three visits.
Signs You Are Overdue
- Water spilling over the front edge during rain. This is a clog, not a sizing problem, nine times out of ten.
- Plants growing in the gutter. Yes, we see it weekly. Your gutters are not supposed to be a garden.
- Staining or streaking down the fascia, which means water is going over the back edge.
- Sagging between hangers — saturated debris is heavy, and it is pulling your system apart.
- Icicles in January. A clogged gutter freezes solid, and that ice mass is what pulls hangers out of the fascia.
Why Clogged Is Worse Than Missing
A clogged gutter is mechanically worse than no gutter at all. A missing gutter dumps water past the wall. A clogged one holds hundreds of pounds of wet debris against your fascia, overflows behind itself into the soffit, and freezes into an ice mass that damages the system it is sitting in. Debris is the most common single cause of gutter failure.
One Warranty Note
Periodic cleaning is required to keep an All Gutter Systems workmanship warranty valid — for the straightforward reason that no installation survives being buried indefinitely. Scheduling it with us is the easiest way to document that it happened.
